Release[]

"Brain Stew/Jaded" was first released on the self-titled single on July 3, 1996. Although this medley version has never seen a release on an album, the two parts of the song are played back-to-back as separate tracks on both Insomniac and International Superhits!.

Single[]

"Brain Stew/Jaded" was released as the third single from Green Day's fourth studio album, Insomniac on July 3, 1996 on CD and cassette in Europe, Australia and Japan. It also received a special "Limited Edition Brain Shaped" version released exclusively in the United Kingdom. It was only released as a promotional radio single in the United States.

It later received a proper release in the United States as a 7" vinyl as part of the Ultimate Collectors Box set on September 15, 2009.

Music Video[]

"Brain Stew/Jaded" received a music video that was released in 1995. The "Brain Stew" portion of the video is sepia toned and depicts the band lying on a couch being pulled through a landfill by a bulldozer, interspersed with shots of hula dancers, mealworms, a dog, and a teacher writing on a chalkboard. The "Jaded" portion of the video is chrome and shows fast shots of the band playing the song in their recording studio with more shots of mealworms and hula dancers.

The music video was included on the compilation album International Supervideos! released on November 13, 2001.

Lyrics[]

I. Brain Stew

[Verse 1]
I'm having trouble trying to sleep
I'm counting sheep, but running out
As time ticks by, still I try
No rest for cross-tops in my mind

[Refrain]
On my own, here we go

[Chorus]
My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed
Dried up and bulging out my skull
My mouth is dry, my face is numb
Fucked up and spun out in my room

[Refrain]
On my own, here we go

[Verse 2]
My mind is set on overdrive
The clock is laughing in my face
A crooked spine, my senses dulled
Past the point of delirium

[Refrain]
On my own, here we go

[Chorus]
My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed
Dried up and bulging out my skull
My mouth is dry, my face is numb
Fucked up and spun out in my room

[Refrain]
On my own, here we go

II. Jaded

[Verse 1]
Somebody keep my balance, I think I'm falling off
Into a state of regression
The expiration date rapidly coming up
It's leaving me behind to rank

[Chorus]
Always move forward
Going straight won't get you nowhere
There is no progress, evolution killed it all
I found my place in nowhere

[Verse 2]
I'm taking one step sideways, leading with my crutch
Got a fucked up equilibrium
Count down from 9 to 5, hooray, we're gonna die
Blessed into our distinction

[Chorus]
Always move forward
Going straight won't get you nowhere
There is no progress, evolution killed it all
I found my place in nowhere

[Chorus]
Always move forward
Going straight won't get you nowhere
There is no progress, evolution killed it all
I found my place in nowhere
In nowhere, in nowhere
